1. Call your credit card company and switch to the credit card with the lowest interest rate. Ask the person to send you a list of credit cards they offer and a description of each card including interest rates, fees, annual fees and perks.
2. Every month when you receive your credit card bill, pay double the minimum payment and pay on time. If you are only able to pay the minimum, keep in mind that you may only be paying the interest and over time you may be spending double the amount on items purchased. Paying on time is very important and effects your credit rating so be mindful of that and use online banking or a banking app to make this process as simple as possible
3. Several times during the year, credit card companies send brochures and/or special offers in the mail or via email to offer clients a balance transfer and an interest rate of 0% for 6 months. This can be beneficial if you carry several balances but you need to make sure you can make more than the suggested monthly payment because 6 months goes by very fast and then before you know it you are paying 17-19% on your original balance.

1. Stretch your grocery dollars and set a budget before you shop. For example, a couple should be able to spend $440/month if you plan ahead and plan properly.
2. Shop alone: children often convince parents to purchase unplanned items that range between $5-10 of unexpected groceries and often want processed, packaged snacks.
3. Plan meals, once a week, for the week and consider portion control: we often purchase too much, cook too much and end up wasting food.
4. Make it yourself: you can easily make pizza, lasagna, pie, soups, broth, boil beans, chop fruit and vegetables, blend juice, cut up your own chicken etc. Do not pay for someone else’s labor even though it’s convenient. If you do not know how to do something or make something just search online.
5. Buy fresh, local and in-season fruits and vegetables or if not possible, buy frozen. Fall-Winter fruits and vegetables include: beets, clementines, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, grapefruit starting in January, kale, kiwis, pears, potatoes, sweet potatoes and winter squash.

Registered education savings plans (RESPs) are as easy as getting your child a SIN card and starting to deposit money into their account. After 2007, we no longer have an annual deposit limit but we still have a lifetime limit of $50,000. This means the lifetime limit of the governments contribution can be up to $7,500. The cap for annual contributions that qualify for the 20 percent Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) has increased from $2,000 to $2,500, resulting in an increase in the grant from $400 to $500. In sum, if parents can contribute $210.00/month for the year, the government will contribute $500 to your child’s account, at the end of the year.
